Splenectomy:

The spleen is located beneath the ribs towards the back of the left side of the abdomen.

Spleen

Its size approximates to that of a clenched fist.
In health the spleen cannot be readily felt due to the overlying ribs.
The ribs afford protection to this organ, but any trauma sufficient to break the ribs on the left may potentially tear (or lacerate) the spleen.

If the spleen enlages it becomes able to be felt below the ribs.
In cases of massive enlargement it may even be seen as a swelling occupying the area between the ribs and the umbilicus.
