Splenectomy:

The spleen is an important, but not essential organ.
Its function is to regulate the quality of red blood cells within the circulation.
It removes old, damaged or abnormal blood cells, maintaining the health of the oxygen carrying cells in the blood stream.

Generally speaking; the removal of the spleen is undertaken for three reasons:

The spleen may be removed either laparoscopically or as an open operation depending upon the circumstances of its need for removal.
