Hernias:

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) is a government agency devoted to the evaluation of medical treatments.

The recommendations of the organisation are that it is the operation of choice for the following herniae.

Unilateral herniae may be repaired by laparoscopic surgery if the surgeon is skilled in this procedure and it is the patient's preference.
The proportion of unsuspected hernia in the opposite groin is approximately 25%. The advantage being that both herniae can repaired at the same time without additional scars.
